Despite the cold, the Strathmore University Sports complex buzzed with energy. Eager participants, adorned in vibrant white and red shirts, made their way briskly into the venue, preparing themselves for the 4th Annual Vice Chancellor’s run.

From children spanning from energetic 5-year-olds, to seasoned runners, to the young-at-heart zipping through their golden years, a diverse mix of ages converged, ready to tackle distances ranging from 5km to 21km, whether running or cycling. Despite the differences in age and mode of participation, they all shared a common goal: to #Run4Impact and #ElimishaAStratizen, ensuring a continuous journey of #KeepLearning.

Among the crowd, world-class athletes like Henry Wanyoike, Lorna Kiplagat, and Tegla Louroupe, along with esteemed figures like Dr. Hooria Chishti Amrit and Joe Sang, Managing Director of Kenya Pipeline Company, University Council members, joined the throng. Stratizens, staff members, and friends and family of Strathmore University, all laced up and rallying for the #Run4Impact cause.

At 6:30 am, the MC rallied everyone for a pre-run stretching and exercises as the anticipation heightened. The route was carefully outlined, each participant attentive, knowing where the journey would begin and end. Armed with stopwatches to track their race, they awaited the signal to start.

Dr. Vincent Ogutu, in his element, graciously mingled among the crowd, extending gratitude to all participants for their support. What’s more, even his mother and sister attended this year’s run, embodying a simple yet profound love that deeply moved everyone present.

On your mark…

As the clock neared 7:00 am, anticipation grew among the participants, who stood ready at their marks, eager for the run to begin. The signal was given by Mrs. Bernadette Musundi, University Council Chair, proudly waved the Strathmore flag, and in an instant the runners surged forward. The ground trembled with the rush of footsteps, resonating with the determination of the runners. Each individual had their own story, their own reason for being there, adding depth and significance to the event.

The race unfolded, spanning from Madaraka to Wilson Airport, then along Langata Road to Karen, and back. Even the usually indifferent Nairobi traffic seems to be on our side today. It’s like the city itself is rooting for us.

Amidst the flurry of runners, there was a remarkable sight: Professor David Sperling, 84 years young, with measured yet resolute steps, showing his determination. Dr. Ogutu, slightly ahead of him, was seen pacing alongside Tuzo Jonathan, #Classof2023 BAC student, who could easily be spotted equipped with his 360-degree camera, capturing every moment. Running alongside them was Ahmed, Henry Wanyoike and his guide, among many others. As the runners pressed on, the #SUWellness team pedaled beside them on their bicycle.

Throughout the route and back, motivational placards and cheering squads kept everyone psyched and spirits high. But the runners pressed on, fuelled by the cheers and the occasional water stops.

Finish line

As we crossed the finish line, we were all declared winners—not just because of our speed or how fast we finished the #VCRUn, but because each step we took was a stride towards a brighter future for a #Stratizen.
